Lasting power of attorney: The statistics

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney is becoming increasingly common as people recognise the importance of future planning. In the UK, the Office of the Public Guardian reported over 900,000 LPA registrations in 2023, with significant uptake in Dorset’s ageing population.

  • In Dorset, over 25% of residents aged 65+ have an LPA in place, reflecting the county’s proactive approach to future planning.
  • Nationally, 70% of LPA registrations are for Property and Financial Affairs, while 30% cover
  • Health and Welfare, with similar trends in Dorset communities like Bournemouth and Poole.
  • Over 40% of UK adults without an LPA regret not planning earlier, according to a 2023 Age UK survey, with many Dorset residents seeking advice after unexpected health issues.
  • Without an LPA, families in Dorset face an average of £10,000 in legal costs and six months’ delay to gain control of a loved one’s affairs through the Court of Protection.

These figures highlight the value of an LPA in protecting your interests. Marley Solicitors has helped countless Dorset residents secure their future with expert LPA services.

Understanding lasting power of attorney

There are two types of LPA, and Marley Solicitors can help you with both:

  • Property and financial affairs LPA: Allows your chosen attorney to manage your finances, such as paying bills, managing bank accounts, or selling property, if you’re unable to do so.
  • Health and welfare LPA: Enables your attorney to make decisions about your medical care, living arrangements, or daily routine when you lack capacity.

We’ll help you decide which LPA (or both) is right for you, draft the documents, and assist with registration at the Office of the Public Guardian. Without an LPA, your loved ones may face costly and lengthy legal processes to act on your behalf, so acting now can save time and stress.

Act now: Setting up an LPA takes just a few weeks to register, but delays can leave you unprotected. Contact us today to get started.

How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?

Once registered with the Office of Public Guardian, they are ready to use. The cost of registration is £82.00 per power. If your income is less than £12,000.00 or you receive the guaranteed element of pension credit, there is a registration fee discount. In addition to this, our costs for a single application for both powers are £450 plus VAT, and for two people for both powers, our costs are £650.00 plus VAT.
